Music of the Carribean Island

Image
I am a very big music person. I love listening to music and also learning about new music, I think music is my love language lol! I am very excited about this blog because it gives me a chance to be creative and learn about a different culture and their music. I’m glad I was able to learn about many cultures and their music in this class, because half of the cultures we discussed, I have never heard of, so taking this class was interesting and I enjoyed it. Although we discussed many cultures in class, it was hard trying to think of a culture we didn’t mention, but as I kept thinking, two of the artists I listen to have a Caribbean background, so it was only right I chose to do Carribean Music. There are many Caribbean genres, but I am focusing on three which are Barbados, Reggae, and Calypso. Barbados is a Caribbean Island country located in The North Atlantic Ocean which hosts a population over 200,000 people. I always thought Barbados had a specific language they speak, but ...

I chose to Interview my grandma, because she’s always questioning my music taste and I was curious to know what kind of music my grandmother was interested in at my age.  Me: What role did music play in your childhood? Grandma: I was always surrounded by music as a kid. I was in the church choir/ praise dancer growing up and I was also a part of my high school band.   Me: What was your favorite genre of music during your childhood?  Grandma: My favorite genre of music was R&B and Gospel because I grew up around a lot of gospel music.  Me: What artist did you listen to during your childhood? Grandma: James's brown, Sherlie Cesar, and Jackson 5 Me: What device did you use to listen to music?  Grandma: I used my little black radio that always had a static in it Me:  Who are your favorite gospel artists in today’s world?  Grandma: Marvin Sapp and Kirk Franklin  Me: What is your opinion on today’s music or music you hear me listening to...

Music & Gender

It is very hard for women to thrive in the music industry because women have to face gender inequality, discrimination and underpayment.  Some of my favorite female artists in the music industry right now are Latto, City Girls, and Megan Thee Stallion. In the music industry men are able to degrade women and talk about drugs and sex but if a woman does these things, they will face backlash because they are a woman. Latto is one of my favorite female artists, she is not afraid to say what is on her mind and express her sexism. In an interview with Breakfast Club Latto discussed how it was hard for her to get her album cleared because men are difficult, and they don't know how to keep a business. In the Interview Latto said, “I'm just keeping it 100, there’s a feature on my album that was difficult to clear, and they Tryna drop nuts on me because I won't respond to a DM”. By Latto sharing this experience, she is able to spotlight the things female artists have to deal with in ...

Music & Rituals

Music has been a big part of my life even before I was born. My dad named me after the famous singer Aaliyah. Music has gotten me through some really hard times in life. For example, one of the hardest things I have been through was the death of my best friend my senior year of high school. This is a day I'll never forget, the morning he died he sent me a good morning text with an angel, which I did not think of at the time. He died November 13,2018 which was a Tuesday. I woke up late for school that day, so I was rushing trying to get dressed. I woke up to 25 missed calls from multiple people combined, so I knew something was wrong. The first person I called back was my mom who broke the news to me. I remember I was in the mirror brushing my hair and next thing you know I broke down to the ground crying. That was the worst day of my life. It rained the day he died and all the way up to his funeral. A song that helped me get through this grieving period was See you again by: Wiz Kh...

Music & Me

Hey guys, my name is Aaliyah Morgan. I am a senior here at Converse, some of my favorite things to do is spend quality time with my family and friends and shop. I also have a YouTube channel that I have had for almost a year, and I do a lot of vlogging on my channel. Music has always been a big part of my life because I was raised in the church, and I sang in the church choir when I was little. My favorite artist is Lil Baby, and I am probably one of his biggest fans. I can sing all his songs word for word and hopefully one day my boyfriend surprises me with tickets so I can see him perform. I started listening to Lil Baby when I was 16 years old during this time, he was not popular as he is today. I am really excited for this class because I can’t wait to learn everyone's music taste because I am definitely in need of a different style of music.  A go to song for me would be Humble by: Lil Baby. This is my favorite go to song because he talks about coming from nothing and becoming...
