Music & Gender

It is very hard for women to thrive in the music industry because women have to face gender inequality, discrimination and underpayment.  Some of my favorite female artists in the music industry right now are Latto, City Girls, and Megan Thee Stallion. In the music industry men are able to degrade women and talk about drugs and sex but if a woman does these things, they will face backlash because they are a woman. Latto is one of my favorite female artists, she is not afraid to say what is on her mind and express her sexism. In an interview with Breakfast Club Latto discussed how it was hard for her to get her album cleared because men are difficult, and they don't know how to keep a business. In the Interview Latto said, “I'm just keeping it 100, there’s a feature on my album that was difficult to clear, and they Tryna drop nuts on me because I won't respond to a DM”. By Latto sharing this experience, she is able to spotlight the things female artists have to deal with in the music industry. Latto is an advocate for sexism and expressing her thoughts and feelings about how women are treated in the music industry.

My second favorite female artist is the City Girls. I love the City Girls because of the way they carry themselves and they are not afraid to rap and sing about whatever they want to. Many people look at City Girls as bad influences because they rap about sex and money. But I think it is perfectly fine because men do it as well, but of course since they are females they are looked down upon because people look at them as having no respect for themselves and being a bad influence on the younger generation.

My last female artist I will be talking about is Megan Thee Stallion. Megan is just like the city girls and not afraid to rap about sex and money. Many people tend to judge her because of her body shape. She has a unique natural body that she embraces through her music videos and on social media, but some men talk about her in a negative way because of the clothing she wears. I have seen plenty of men embrace their bodies on social media, but it’s okay for them because they are men and it's not okay for women because it's looked at as “un lady-like”.

  1. Hey! I agree with you that the music industry makes it a difficult place for a woman to strive in. I feel like we pinpointed some of the same main ideas in both of our blogs. I also discussed the different subjects that were acceptable for a female vs. male artist to sing about.

  2. Hey Liyah!
I agree with you about how difficult it is for females to express themselves and have gender equality in the music industry. I have seen a lot of discrimination and comments about how women should not sing some types of songs because that doesn’t look good on them and how they should not wear certain clothes. It is actually sad to find out that there is still a lot of sexism in our society, but at the same time I’m seeing a lot of female artists raising their voices and expressing their opinions through the music, which is good because It is a starting point to end stereotypes and inequality.

  3. I also wrote a little on gender disparity in hip-hop music and I agree with what you have to say. I like your inclusion of the double standards faced by many female artists as well.

  4. I liked how you approached this blog talking about gender disparity in the music industry. I completely agree with how you pointed out that men in the music world get away with degrading women in their lyrics as well as things like sex, money, drugs, etc. It is normalized to us. Whereas if a woman were to have the same sort of things in their song lyrics, they would most likely receive backlash.

  5. Hey Liyah , I love how you acknowledge how gender can affect the Music industry and how individuals will look at you different because of your gender in the music industry and expect you to do different things.

  7. Hey Liyah, what you said touched on a very prominent topic. In an industry where pleasing the masses is a necessity and women are viewed as sex symbols first and artist second it is very hard to thrive. This perception needs to change and slowly but surly is.
