Music & Family

I chose to Interview my grandma, because she’s always questioning my music taste and I was curious to know what kind of music my grandmother was interested in at my age.

Me: What role did music play in your childhood?

Grandma: I was always surrounded by music as a kid. I was in the church choir/ praise dancer growing up and I was also a part of my high school band.

Me: What was your favorite genre of music during your childhood?

Grandma: My favorite genre of music was R&B and Gospel because I grew up around a lot of gospel music.

Me: What artist did you listen to during your childhood?

Grandma: James's brown, Sherlie Cesar, and Jackson 5

Me: What device did you use to listen to music?

Grandma: I used my little black radio that always had a static in it

Me:  Who are your favorite gospel artists in today’s world?

Grandma: Marvin Sapp and Kirk Franklin

Me: What is your opinion on today’s music or music you hear me listening to?

Grandma: When I hear the music you listen to Aaliyah, I just shake my head. I have no problem with today’s music, it’s just a lot of cursing in music now and days versus back in the day our music didn’t have much cursing in it.

Me: What instrument did you play during your childhood, if you played any?

Grandma: I was in my high school band, but I was a dancer. I mentioned earlier how I grew up in the church and I was in the church choir, and I used to play the tambourine every Sunday. That’s the closest instrument I’ve played during my childhood.

Me: Do you still listen to music now as much as you did during your childhood?

Grandma: Ha ha ha I’m older now and everything is a technology base that I don’t know how to use. The only time I listen to music is on the radio in my car, or when I’m playing gospel music on my radio in the house, which is only on Sundays while I’m getting ready for church.

Me: What’s one song you love to sing/hear in church?

Grandma: I love “Open the flood gates”. That song was played at my niece's funeral and every time I hear that song it gives me chills.

This Includes the end of the interview. I really enjoyed interviewing my grandma and getting her thoughts on her music taste. I honestly think she enjoyed this interview more than me. I’ve learned a lot about my grandma that I didn’t know, so I’m grateful to be able to interview her on her childhood music.

Comments

  1. The older generation not liking the cursing in today's music is definitely a universal thing because my mom made the exact same comment.

  4. Hello Aaliyah! I agree with our classmates that all of the older generations shakes there head at the music we listen to today. I love that your grandmother could tie such an emotional point in life to her favorite songs to sing/hear! It shows her strength!
